Learn how this science-backed technique can boost your reading speed by up to 25% while maintaining comprehension. ## What is Bionic Reading? Bionic Reading is a revolutionary reading method that guides your eyes through text by bolding the initial letters of each word. This creates artificial fixation points that help your brain recognize words faster, allowing you to read more efficiently without sacrificing comprehension. The concept is based on how our brains actually process text. When we read, we don't look at every letter — we recognize word shapes and patterns. Bionic Reading amplifies this natural process by highlighting the most important parts of each word. ## How Does Bionic Reading Work? When you enable Bionic Reading in Readima, the extension automatically transforms any webpage into a bionic-optimized format: 1. **Fixation Points**: The first portion of each word is bolded, creating visual anchors 2. **Pattern Recognition**: Your brain uses these anchors to predict and complete words faster 3. **Reduced Eye Movement**: Less saccadic movement means faster reading with less fatigue For example, normal text like this: > "Speed reading is a valuable skill in today's fast-paced world." Becomes: > "**Spe**ed **rea**ding **is** a **val**uable **ski**ll **in** **tod**ay's **fas**t-**pac**ed **wor**ld." Here's what Bionic Reading looks like in action with Readima: ![Bionic Reading Demo - Readima extension showing bionic formatted text with sidebar controls](/images/features/bionic-reading-demo.jpg) ## Readima's Bionic Reading Features Readima offers the most customizable Bionic Reading experience available: ### Adjustable Fixation Level Control how much of each word gets bolded: - **30-50% fixation** (Free tier): Perfect for beginners - **20-80% fixation** (Pro tier): Fine-tune to your exact preference Lower fixation (20-30%) provides subtle guidance, while higher fixation (60-80%) creates stronger visual anchors for faster scanning. ### Bold Weight Selection Choose how prominent the bold text appears: - Weights from 600 to 900 - Match your reading style and screen brightness - Reduce eye strain with lighter weights ### Theme Integration Bionic Reading works seamlessly with Readima's reading themes: - Default (light) - Dark mode - Sepia (Pro) - Beige (Pro) Customize font family, size, line height, and page width for the perfect reading environment. ## The Science Behind Bionic Reading Research in cognitive psychology shows that skilled readers don't read letter by letter — they recognize word shapes. This is called the "word superiority effect." Bionic Reading leverages this by: 1. **Reducing cognitive load**: Bold fixation points give your brain head starts on word recognition 2. **Guiding eye movement**: Your eyes naturally jump to high-contrast points 3. **Maintaining context**: Unlike RSVP, you see full sentences for better comprehension Studies suggest readers can achieve 10-25% faster reading speeds with bionic formatting while maintaining the same comprehension levels. ## When to Use Bionic Reading Bionic Reading excels in certain scenarios: **Best for:** - Long-form articles and blog posts - Research papers and documentation - News articles and newsletters - Self-paced reading sessions **Consider other methods for:** - Poetry or creative writing (where rhythm matters) - Technical code documentation - Very short content ## How to Enable Bionic Reading in Readima Getting started with Bionic Reading takes seconds: 1. Install the [Readima Chrome extension](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readima) 2. Navigate to any article or webpage 3. Click the Readima icon and select "Bionic Reading" mode 4. Adjust fixation and bold weight to your preference 5. Start reading faster immediately ## Combine with Other Reading Modes Readima lets you switch between three reading modes: - **Meta Guiding (40% usage)**: Pointer-based reading assistance - **Bionic Reading (32% usage)**: Typography-based speed enhancement - **RSVP (28% usage)**: Rapid word-by-word presentation Many users start with Bionic Reading for casual content, then switch to RSVP for intensive study sessions. ## Track Your Bionic Reading Progress Readima's dashboard shows exactly how Bionic Reading improves your speed: - Monitor your average WPM (words per minute) - See week-over-week improvement percentages - Track time saved compared to your baseline reading speed Users report saving an average of **1 hour 41 minutes** over 14 days with Readima's speed reading features. ## Start Reading Faster Today Bionic Reading removes the friction from faster reading. No training required — just enable it and your brain adapts naturally. ## Related Articles - [Track Your Reading Journey](/blog/track-your-reading-journey-dashboard-stats-analytics) - Monitor your speed improvements - [How To Read 3x Faster Through RSVP](/blog/the-rapid-serial-visual-presentation-method-for-speed-reading) - Try another speed reading method - [Meta Guiding – How To Learn Faster](/blog/meta-guiding-how-to-learn-faster-by-changing-the-way-you-read) - The pointer technique --- **Ready to transform how you read online?** [Download Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readima/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj) for free and experience Bionic Reading on your next article! Track articles read, words consumed, time spent, reading speed trends, and see exactly how much time you're saving. ## Why Track Your Reading? In a world where we consume thousands of words daily, understanding your reading habits is powerful. Are you reading more this week than last? Is your speed improving? How much time are you actually saving with speed reading techniques? Readima's Reading Dashboard answers all these questions with beautiful, actionable analytics. ## The Reading Overview Dashboard When you open Readima's dashboard, you're greeted with four key metrics that summarize your reading activity: ### Articles Read Track the total number of articles you've consumed. Whether it's news, research papers, or blog posts, every piece of content counts toward your reading goals. ### Words Read See the exact number of words you've processed. This metric helps you understand your true reading volume — some articles are 500 words, others are 5,000. Word count tells the real story. ### Time Spent Know exactly how much time you've invested in reading. This includes active reading time across all websites where you've used Readima. ### Time Saved This is the magic number. Readima calculates how long your reading would have taken at an average 200 WPM pace, then compares it to your actual reading time. The difference? That's time back in your day. > Users save an average of **1 hour 41 minutes** over a 14-day period using Readima. ## Reading Speed Trend The heart of the dashboard is the Reading Speed Trend graph. This line chart shows your words-per-minute (WPM) over time, helping you visualize your progress. Key features: - **Average WPM display**: See your overall reading speed (e.g., 311 avg WPM) - **Trend line**: Watch your speed improve week over week - **Comparison indicators**: "16% faster than last week" tells you if you're improving This data is invaluable for understanding how speed reading techniques are working for you. ## Reading Activity Heatmap Similar to GitHub's contribution graph, the Reading Activity heatmap shows your daily reading patterns: - Darker squares = more reading activity - Identify your most productive days - Spot patterns in your reading habits - Stay motivated by maintaining streaks ## Top Sites Ever wonder where you spend most of your reading time? The Top Sites panel ranks the websites where you read most frequently: - example.com — 4 articles - health.com — 3 articles - finance.com — 3 articles - mit.edu — 3 articles - nasa.gov — 3 articles This helps you understand your content diet and reading interests. ## Reading Modes Breakdown Readima offers three reading modes, and the dashboard shows which ones you use most: - **Meta Guiding**: 40% — Pointer-based reading assistance - **Bionic Reading**: 32% — Bold text fixation points - **RSVP**: 28% — Rapid serial visual presentation Understanding your mode preferences helps you optimize your reading strategy for different content types. ## Free vs Pro Analytics Readima offers powerful analytics at every tier: ### Free Tier - Last 14 days of reading activity - Basic WPM chart - Article count per day - Total time spent ### Pro Tier ($2.9/month) - **Full reading history** (unlimited) - WPM improvement trends with percentage gains - Words consumed over time - Reading patterns analysis - 90-day date range filter - **CSV export** for personal analysis ## Using Analytics to Improve Here's how to leverage your reading data: ### Set Baseline Metrics Before trying new techniques, note your current: - Average WPM - Articles per week - Time spent reading ### Experiment with Reading Modes Try each mode for a week and compare your WPM: 1. Week 1: Meta Guiding only 2. Week 2: Bionic Reading only 3. Week 3: RSVP for long articles 4. Week 4: Mix based on content type ### Track Progress Over Time Check your dashboard weekly to see: - Is your average WPM increasing? - Are you reading more consistently? - Which modes give you the best results? ## The Stats Cards At the top of your dashboard, four stats cards give you instant insights: | Metric | Example | What It Means | |--------|---------|---------------| | Articles Read | 25 | Total articles consumed | | Words Read | 56.7K | Total words processed | | Time Spent | 3h 2m | Active reading time | | Time Saved | 1h 41m | Time saved vs. average reader | These cards update in real-time as you read, giving you instant feedback on your progress. ## Privacy-First Analytics All your reading data stays local in your browser. Readima doesn't send your reading history to any server. Your analytics are: - Stored locally in Chrome storage - Never shared with third parties - Exportable for your own analysis (Pro) - Deletable at any time ## Get Started with Reading Analytics Ready to understand your reading habits? 1. Learn how gamification psychology helps you read more, stay motivated, and earn badges for your reading milestones. ## The Power of Reading Streaks There's a reason Duolingo, GitHub, and Snapchat all use streaks — they work. The simple act of maintaining a daily streak creates powerful psychological motivation to keep going. Readima brings this proven gamification technique to your reading habit. ## How Reading Streaks Work Every day you read at least one article with Readima, your streak increases by one. Miss a day? Your streak resets to zero (unless you have a streak freeze). It sounds simple, but the psychology is powerful: - **Loss aversion**: You don't want to lose your streak - **Momentum**: Each day builds on the last - **Identity**: "I'm on a 30-day reading streak" becomes part of who you are ## The Streak Dashboard Readima's Streak page shows you everything at a glance: ### Current Streak A prominent flame icon displays your current streak with encouraging messages: > **12 day streak** > "You've read today. Great job!" ### Streak Statistics Two key numbers track your reading consistency: - **Longest Streak**: Your all-time best (e.g., 23 days) - **Total Days**: Total days you've read with Readima (e.g., 21 days) ### Streak Calendar A visual calendar shows your reading activity: - **Green squares**: Days you read - **Empty squares**: Days you missed - **Today**: Highlighted with a border The calendar makes it easy to see patterns — maybe you read every weekday but skip weekends, or you're most consistent in the mornings. ## Achievements and Badges Beyond streaks, Readima rewards your reading milestones with achievement badges: ### Streak Achievements | Badge | Requirement | |-------|-------------| | 7 Day Streak | Read 7 consecutive days | | 2 Week Warrior | Read 14 consecutive days | | Monthly Master | Read 30 consecutive days | | Century Reader | Read 100 consecutive days | ### Reading Volume Achievements | Badge | Requirement | |-------|-------------| | Getting Started | Read your first article | | Bookworm | Read 10 articles | | Avid Reader | Read 50 articles | | 10K Words | Read 10,000 total words | | 100K Words | Read 100,000 total words | Achievements provide milestone moments that celebrate your progress, even if your streak breaks. ## Free vs Pro Streak Features ### Free Tier - 14-day streak display - Basic daily goal ("Read 1 article today") - Streak counter in sidebar - View recent achievements ### Pro Tier ($2.9/month) - **Streak Freeze**: Save your streak once per week when you miss a day - **Streak Recovery**: Regain a lost streak within 24 hours - **Customizable Goals**: Set goals by articles, words, or time - **Push Notifications**: Reminders when your streak is at risk - **All Achievement Badges**: Including rare milestone badges ## The Psychology of Reading Gamification Gamification isn't just about fun — it's backed by behavioral science: ### Variable Rewards Not knowing exactly when you'll earn the next badge keeps you engaged. Will reading this article push you to 10K words? ### Progress Visualization The streak calendar and achievement grid give you visual proof of your commitment. This "endowed progress effect" makes you more likely to continue. ### Social Proof Knowing that others are building reading streaks creates a sense of community and healthy competition. ### Identity Reinforcement Each badge reinforces your identity as a reader. "I'm a 2 Week Warrior" is more powerful than "I sometimes read." ## Building Your Reading Habit Here's how to use Readima's gamification to build a lasting reading habit: ### Start Small Don't commit to reading 10 articles a day. Start with one. The goal is consistency, not volume. ### Read at the Same Time Habit stacking works. Read one article with your morning coffee, or during your commute. ### Use Streak Freezes Wisely (Pro) Save your streak freeze for emergencies — sick days, travel, or genuinely busy periods. Don't use it as a crutch. ### Celebrate Milestones When you earn a badge, take a moment to appreciate it. Screenshot your 30-day streak. Share it if you want. Celebration reinforces the habit. ### Don't Beat Yourself Up If your streak breaks, look at your "Total Days" stat. That number never resets. You've still read all those days. ## Streak Tips for Success 1. **Morning reading**: Read first thing before distractions pile up 2. **Bookmark interesting articles**: Always have something ready to read 3. **Use Read Later**: Save articles throughout the day, read one before bed 4. **Set a reminder**: Enable notifications (Pro) or set a phone alarm 5. **Make it easy**: Keep the Readima icon visible in your browser toolbar ## Real Results from Real Readers Users who engage with Readima's streak system report: - 3x more articles read per week - 40% improvement in reading consistency - Stronger identification as "a reader" - Better retention of information (more engaged reading) ## Start Your Streak Today Building a reading habit doesn't require willpower — it requires systems. Readima's streaks and achievements provide the system. 1. Install [Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readima/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj) 2. Read one article today 3. Learn how Readima's Read Later feature helps you save, organize, and actually read the content you discover online. Build a personal reading queue that works. ## The Lost Article Problem We've all been there. You're scrolling through Twitter, browsing Hacker News, or checking your email when you spot an interesting article. "I'll read this later," you think, opening it in a new tab. Two weeks later, you have 47 tabs open, your browser is eating 8GB of RAM, and you can't remember which articles were actually worth reading. Readima's Read Later feature solves this problem. ## How Read Later Works With one click, save any article to your personal reading queue. Readima extracts the article content, saves it locally, and presents it in a clean interface when you're ready to read. ### Saving Articles When you find an article worth reading later: 1. Click the Readima icon in your browser toolbar 2. Select "Save to Read Later" 3. The article is instantly saved to your queue Or use the keyboard shortcut for even faster saving. ### Your Reading Queue Open Readima's dashboard and click "Read Later" to see your saved articles: - **Thumbnail preview**: Visual identification of each article - **Title and description**: Remember why you saved it - **Reading time estimate**: Know how long it'll take (e.g., "8 min read") - **Time since saved**: "1d ago", "3d ago" — see what's getting stale - **Reading progress**: Pick up where you left off (e.g., "25% read") ## The Perfect Read Later Interface Readima's Read Later page shows exactly what you need: | Article | Details | |---------|---------| | Breakthrough in Quantum Computing | 8 min read • 1d ago | | The Next Decade in Technology | 13 min read • 2d ago | | New Discoveries in Medicine | 9 min read • 3d ago • 25% read | | AI Revolution in 2024 | 16 min read • 5d ago | | Global Market Trends | 11 min read • 2/28/2026 • 50% read | Each article card includes: - Clean thumbnail - Full title - Brief description - Estimated reading time - Age of the saved article - Progress indicator (if partially read) - Quick remove button ## Free vs Pro Read Later Features ### Free Tier - Save up to **8 articles** in your queue - Basic list view with title and URL - Remove articles when done - Reading progress tracking ### Pro Tier ($2.9/month) - **Unlimited articles** — never hit a limit - **Folders and tags** — organize by topic - **Search within saved** — find articles instantly - **Sync across devices** — read anywhere - **Import from Pocket/Instapaper** — migrate your existing queue ## Why Read Later Beats Browser Bookmarks Browser bookmarks are where articles go to die. Here's why Read Later works better: ### 1. Visual Organization Bookmarks are just URLs. Read Later shows thumbnails, descriptions, and reading times. You can actually see what you saved. ### 2. Offline Reading (Pro) Read Later caches article content. Even if the original site goes down or changes, your saved version remains. ### 3. Progress Tracking Bookmarks don't know if you've read them. Read Later shows "50% read" so you know exactly where you left off. ### 4. Queue Psychology A bookmark folder feels infinite. An 8-article queue feels actionable. You're motivated to empty it. ### 5. Integration with Reading Modes Open any saved article directly into Bionic Reading, Meta Guiding, or RSVP mode. Your reading preferences apply automatically. ## Building a Read Later Workflow Here's how to make Read Later work for you: ### Morning Content Sweep Spend 5 minutes in the morning saving interesting articles you encounter: - Email newsletters - Social media links - News feeds Don't read them yet. Just save. ### Dedicated Reading Time Set aside 20-30 minutes for focused reading: - Open your Read Later queue - Start with shorter articles to build momentum - Use Bionic Reading or RSVP for speed ### Weekly Queue Review Every Sunday, review your queue: - Remove articles that no longer interest you - Prioritize what matters most - Celebrate your "read" count ## The 8-Article Sweet Spot Free users get 8 articles. This isn't a limitation — it's a feature. Research shows that smaller queues reduce decision fatigue and increase completion rates. When you hit 8 articles: 1. You're forced to read or remove 2. No infinite backlog grows 3. Everything stays fresh 4. You actually read what you save If you need more than 8, Pro unlimited is available. But try the limit first — it might change how you consume content. ## Migrating from Other Services ### From Pocket Pro users can import their Pocket library directly into Readima Read Later. Your years of saved articles come with you. ### From Instapaper Same story — import your Instapaper queue with one click (Pro). ### From Browser Bookmarks While there's no direct import, you can easily save your most important bookmarks to Read Later, then delete the bookmark. Your reading list gets organized, and your bookmarks get cleaner. ## Read Later + Reading History Here's where Readima shines: Read Later integrates with your Reading History. When you finish an article from your queue: - It's removed from Read Later - It appears in your Reading History - Your stats update (words read, time saved) - Your streak continues Nothing falls through the cracks. ## Stop Hoarding, Start Reading The best reading system is one you actually use. Read Later gives you: - A place to save interesting content - A clean interface to consume it - Progress tracking to stay motivated - Integration with speed reading tools Ready to build your reading queue? 1. Install [Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readima/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj) 2. Save your first article to Read Later 3. Set a time tomorrow to read it 4. Pro users unlock all 5. ## Adding Notes to Highlights A highlight without context is often meaningless weeks later. Readima lets you add notes: - **Explain why it matters**: "This relates to the project I'm working on" - **Add your reaction**: "Controversial but interesting" - **Create action items**: "Share this with the team" - **Connect ideas**: "Similar to what I read about in that other article" Notes appear beneath the highlight and are searchable along with the highlighted text. ## Free vs Pro Highlights ### Free Tier - **8 highlights total** across all pages - **2 colors**: Yellow and Green - View highlights in sidebar - Basic highlight management ### Pro Tier ($2.9/month) - **Unlimited highlights** — never hold back - **All 5 colors** for visual organization - **Add notes** to any highlight - **Export to Markdown** — use in Obsidian, Notion, etc. - **Export to Notion** via API integration - **Search across all highlights** ## The Active Reading Workflow Here's how to use highlights for better learning: ### While Reading 1. **First pass**: Read the full article without highlighting 2. **Second pass**: Go back and highlight key points 3. **Add notes**: Explain why each highlight matters to you ### After Reading 1. **Review highlights**: Open the dashboard and skim your recent highlights 2. **Connect ideas**: Notice patterns across articles 3. **Export insights**: Move important highlights to your notes system ### Weekly Review 1. **Browse all highlights** from the past week 2. **Remove outdated ones**: Keep only what's valuable 3. **Export keepers**: Move to permanent storage in Notion/Obsidian ## Exporting Your Highlights ### Markdown Export (Pro) Click "Export" on the Highlights page to get a clean Markdown file: ```markdown ## Highlights from 2026-03-04 ### example.com > "AI is revolutionizing how doctors diagnose diseases" Note: Great insight! ### nature.com > "The global temperature has risen by 1.1°C since pre-industrial times" ### dev.to > "Always use const by default, let when needed" Note: Remember this pattern ``` Import this into Obsidian, Notion, or any Markdown-compatible tool. ### Notion Integration (Pro) Connect your Notion workspace and highlights sync automatically: - Each highlight becomes a database entry - Notes, colors, and sources are preserved - Search across all your knowledge ## Highlights in Context Unlike some highlighting tools, Readima remembers where your highlights came from: - Click any highlight to return to the original article - See highlights in context with surrounding text - The highlight is re-applied when you revisit the page This source linking is crucial for research and fact-checking. ## Use Cases for Highlights ### Research - Collect evidence for a paper or article - Track sources with automatic URL storage - Export citations with one click ### Learning - Mark concepts you need to review - Add notes explaining your understanding - Build a personal knowledge base ### Work - Save important information from reports - Highlight action items in emails - Collect competitive intelligence ### Content Creation - Gather inspiration and quotes - Track statistics and data points - Build a swipe file of great writing ## The Highlight Limit Philosophy Free users get 8 highlights. This encourages intentional highlighting: - Don't highlight everything - Only save what truly matters - Review and remove regularly - Be selective about what deserves preservation If you consistently need more, Pro unlimited is available. ## From Highlights to Knowledge The goal isn't to have a huge highlight collection. It's to: 1. **Engage actively** with what you read 2. **Capture insights** before they fade 3. **Review and connect** ideas over time 4. **Build lasting knowledge** through repetition Readima's highlighting system supports this entire cycle. ## Start Highlighting Today Transform your reading from passive consumption to active learning: 1. Speed reading involves recognizing and absorbing phrases or sentences on a page quickly, instead of focusing on individual words. To boost speed reading skills, the Pointer Method, Tracker-and-Pacer Method, and Scanning (or Previewing) Method are outlined and described. Additionally, the RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation) method is introduced as another technique that can be used to improve speed reading. Finally, the Readima Chrome extension is introduced as a tool that incorporates all of these methods and can help users improve their speed reading skills. ## Why should you learn speed reading? Speed reading is a valuable skill in today's fast-paced world, where time is a precious commodity. By improving your speed reading skills, you can increase your productivity, allowing you to consume more information in less time. However, with traditional speed reading techniques, some people struggle to retain comprehension and recall the information they've read. This is where Readima, a Chrome extension, comes into play. ## How can Readima extension can help you read faster? Readima is designed to help you speed up your reading while maintaining comprehension and recall. It uses a combination of three methods: the Pointer method, Rapid Serial Visual Presentation, and the Scanning method. By using these techniques, Readima helps you train your brain to read more efficiently and effectively. ### 1. The Pointer Method By holding a card or pointer and drawing it down the page as you read, you can increase your reading speed. This helps you avoid sub-vocalization and instead rely on your ability to understand words more quickly than you can say them. Readima has a feature that stimulates this [Pointer Method](/meta-guiding-how-to-learn-faster-by-changing-the-way-you-read) for speed reading, making it easier for users to implement this technique in their reading practices. With this feature, users can simply use a virtual pointer, following along with the text as they read. This helps to increase their reading speed and improve their focus on the words, leading to a more efficient and effective reading experience. The Pointer Method feature in Readima is a valuable tool for anyone looking to improve their speed reading skills. > *[Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/reading-buddy/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj?hl=en&authuser=0) offers this pointer feature while you read on the Internet. * ![](/images/header/meta-guiding.gif) ### 2. The Scanning Method This involves quickly moving your eyes down the page and identifying specific words and phrases. You won't read every word, but you will land on important information to allow you to grasp the basic idea. ![scan_and_skim_overview.png](/images/scan_and_skim_overview.png) [The Scan & Skim feature](/discover-the-game-changin-scan-and-skim-feature-of-the-readima-extension) in Readima is designed to help users quickly and efficiently get a sense of the main ideas and key points in a piece of text without having to read every word. This feature allows the reader to choose a custom color for highlighting the first and last sentence of each paragraph. By doing so, the reader can quickly scan through the text and identify the beginning and end of each idea. This not only saves time, but also helps the reader retain a clear understanding of the text's structure and content. The Scan & Skim feature in Readima makes it easier for users to quickly get a sense of a text's content and to identify the most important information, making it a valuable tool for anyone looking to improve their speed reading skills. ### 3. Rapid Serial Visual Presentation Readima also incorporates the [Rapid Serial Visual Presentation](/the-rapid-serial-visual-presentation-method-for-speed-reading) (RSVP) method. This method involves presenting text at high speeds, one word at a time, allowing the reader to focus on each word and increase their reading speed. By presenting text in this way, the reader's brain has to process the information more quickly, leading to an improvement in speed reading skills. The RSVP method can be particularly effective for those who struggle with sub-vocalization and have trouble retaining comprehension while speed reading. With the RSVP method, readers are forced to focus on the words themselves, rather than hearing them in their heads, leading to improved comprehension and recall. Readima's implementation of the RSVP method, along with its other techniques, makes it an effective tool for improving speed reading skills. `youtube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZoM9SBi4hY` ## Summary By using Readima, you can train your brain to quickly and effectively process information, improving your speed reading skills. One technique that the scan and skim feature is closely related to is [meta-guiding](/meta-guiding-how-to-learn-faster-by-changing-the-way-you-read) which also utilizes similar highlighting to help reader focus on the important information and to quickly find meaningful patterns. By providing a visual cue for key information, the scan and skim feature can help users quickly understand the structure and organization of a piece of text. This can be especially helpful when reading texts with complex or unfamiliar subjects. Another technique that the scan and skim feature is closely related to is the Serial [Visual Presentation (RSVP)](/boost-your-reading-speed-and-comprehension-with-this-simple-trick-RSVP). RSVP is a method for reading text rapidly and efficiently by presenting the words in a rapid sequence, typically one word at a time. With the highlight feature, user can still understand the context as if they were reading the text with RSVP but without the need to move their eyes back and forth. The Readima extension is also customizable, allowing users to adjust the settings to suit their personal reading preferences. Users can choose the color of the highlight, the size of the text, and even the font. This can help users personalize the reading experience and make it more comfortable for their own eyes. ## Summary In conclusion, the Scan and Skim feature of the Readima extension for Google Chrome is a powerful tool for improving [reading speed and comprehension](/speed-reading-the-secrets-super-power-for-success). This blog post offers tips and strategies for teaching speed reading to adults, including setting a specific reading speed goal, previewing material before reading, using visualization and memory improvement techniques, and practicing regularly. The post also suggests using online resources and apps to help improve speed reading skills. By following these tips, adults can learn to speed read and improve their reading speed and comprehension. ## Why should adults need to learn speed reading? Speed reading is a skill that can greatly benefit adults in their personal and professional lives. By learning to read faster, adults can save time and increase their productivity, as well as improve their ability to comprehend and retain information. ## Here are some tips and strategies for teaching speed reading to adults 1. Set a goal for reading speed. It's important to have a specific target in mind when trying to increase reading speed. This can help provide motivation and give a sense of accomplishment when the goal is reached. A good starting point for adult learners is around 250-300 words per minute (wpm). With practice and dedication, it's possible to eventually reach speeds of 500-700 wpm or even higher. 2. Use a timer to track progress. One way to measure reading speed is to use a timer to track the time it takes to read a specific passage. This can help adults see how their speed is improving over time and identify areas where they may be able to improve. 3. Use a finger or a pen as a guide. One technique for increasing reading speed is to use a finger or a pen as a guide while reading. This helps the eyes focus on a specific point on the page, allowing them to move more quickly and efficiently. 4. Practice previewing material before reading. Before diving into a reading assignment, take a few minutes to preview the material. Look at the headings, subheadings, and any graphics or charts. This can give a good idea of the overall structure and content of the text, making it easier to understand and retain when reading at a faster pace. 5. Use the "pacing" technique. The pacing technique involves setting a consistent reading speed and maintaining it throughout the reading session. This can help improve reading speed and comprehension by preventing the eyes from lingering too long on individual words or phrases. 6. Take breaks and practice regularly. Reading for long periods of time can be tiring, so it's important to take breaks and give the eyes a rest. In addition, practicing speed reading on a regular basis can help improve overall reading efficiency. 7. Use visualization techniques. Visualization techniques involve creating mental images while reading to help better understand and retain the material. For example, if reading about a historical event, try to visualize the scene in your mind's eye. This can help make the material more engaging and make it easier to remember. 8. Use memory improvement techniques. Memory improvement techniques can also be helpful for improving reading speed and comprehension. For example, using mnemonic devices such as acronyms or rhymes can help commit information to memory more easily. 9. Use online resources and apps. There are many online resources and apps available that can help adults improve their speed reading skills. These resources often include speed reading exercises, tips, and strategies, as well as tools for tracking progress. ## Summary Overall, learning to speed read can be a valuable skill for adults. By setting a goal, tracking progress, previewing material, and using visualization and memory improvement techniques, adults can improve their reading speed and comprehension, saving time and increasing productivity. With practice and dedication, anyone can become a faster, more efficient reader. ## Related Reading - [Speed Reading: The Super Power For Success](/blog/speed-reading-the-secrets-super-power-for-success) - Why speed reading matters - [Is Speed Reading Really Worth It?](/blog/is-speed-reading-really-worth-it-find-out-the-truth-here) - The honest truth - [Want to Read More Books in Less Time?](/blog/want-to-read-more-books-in-less-time-here-how-speed-reading-can-help) - Practical tips --- **Start speed reading today!** [Download Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readima/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj) — the free Chrome extension with three proven speed reading methods: Meta Guiding, RSVP, and Bionic Reading. Find out the truth here! Source: https://readima.com/blog/is-speed-reading-really-worth-it-find-out-the-truth-here Published: 2022-12-27 Tags: Speed reading, Comprehension, Techniques, Limitations, Improvement Speed reading is a skill that can be useful for processing information quickly and efficiently, but it is not always suitable for every type of material and may not always lead to improved comprehension. This blog post discusses the limitations of speed reading and offers strategies for overcoming them, including practicing with a variety of different types of material, taking breaks when needed, and using techniques that focus on comprehension rather than just speed. It is important to use speed reading in the right context and not sacrifice comprehension for speed. ## The Limitations of Speed Reading: What You Need to Know [Speed reading](/speed-reading-the-secrets-super-power-for-success) is a skill that has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, with people looking for ways to process information more efficiently and quickly. While speed reading can certainly be a useful skill, it is important to understand that it is not always suitable for every type of material and may not always lead to improved comprehension. In this blog post, we will explore some of the limitations of speed reading and how to overcome them. ## 3 main limitations of speed reading One of the main limitations of speed reading is that it is **not always effective for all types of material**. Some people may find that they can speed read through dense, technical material with ease, while others may struggle to comprehend even simple texts at a faster pace. This is because different types of material require different levels of concentration and focus, and trying to read too quickly can make it difficult to fully understand what is being read. Another limitation of speed reading is that it can be tiring and require a lot of effort to maintain high reading speeds. This can lead to fatigue and a decrease in comprehension, especially if you are reading for long periods of time. It is important to take regular breaks and give your brain time to process the information you have read, rather than trying to power through at a high speed. One of the main arguments against speed reading is that it may not actually improve comprehension. While some people may be able to read more quickly and still fully understand the material, others may find that their comprehension suffers at higher reading speeds. This is because speed reading often involves skimming or skipping over details and focusing on the main points, which can lead to a lack of understanding of the material as a whole. There is also a common misconception that [speed reading](/the-rapid-serial-visual-presentation-method-for-speed-reading) means not rereading or reviewing material. However, this is not the case, and it is often necessary to go back and review or reread certain sections to fully understand and retain the information. Skipping this step in the pursuit of speed can ultimately lead to a lack of understanding and retention of the material. ## Overcoming the Limitations of Speed Reading: Strategies and Techniques So, how can we overcome these limitations of speed reading and still reap the benefits of this skill? One way is to practice with a variety of different types of material and find what works best for you. You may find that you can speed read through some types of material but not others, and that’s okay. It is also important to be mindful of your own comprehension levels and take breaks when needed. Another way to overcome the limitations of speed reading is to use techniques that focus on improving comprehension rather than just speed. For example, you can try highlighting or underlining important points, taking notes as you read, or asking yourself questions about the material as you go. These techniques can help you engage with the material more deeply and improve your understanding of it. Finally, it is important to remember that speed reading is just one tool in your toolkit, and it is not always the best option for every situation. While it can be a useful skill to have, it is important to use it in the right context and not sacrifice comprehension for speed. > *[Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/reading-buddy/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj?hl=en&authuser=0) offers Meta Guiding feature for you to practice speed reading* ![](/images/header/meta-guiding.gif) ## Summary In conclusion, while speed reading can be a useful skill, it is important to understand its limitations and how to overcome them. By being mindful of your own comprehension levels and using techniques that focus on understanding rather than just speed, you can still reap the benefits of speed reading without sacrificing comprehension. ## Related Articles - [9 Reasons Why You Need to Learn Speed Reading](/blog/9-reasons-why-you-need-to-learn-speed-reading-now) - The benefits explained - [Get Ahead in Life with Speed Reading](/blog/get-ahead-in-life-with-these-proven-speed-reading-techniques-for-adults) - Techniques for adults - [Want to Read More Books?](/blog/want-to-read-more-books-in-less-time-here-how-speed-reading-can-help) - Apply speed reading to books --- **See the results for yourself!** [Download Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readima/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj) for free and track your actual reading speed improvement. Whether you prefer fiction or non-fiction, enjoy a specific genre, or are in the mood for something light or challenging, we provide guidance on how to find the right book for you. From reading reviews and summaries to asking for recommendations and trying out samples, we offer a variety of strategies to help you discover your next favorite read. ## Picking the right book is hard Picking the right book can be a daunting task, especially with the vast array of options available. With so many genres, authors, and styles to choose from, how do you know which book is the best fit for you? ## How to Choose the Best Book for Your Preferences and Mood Here are a few tips to help you find the perfect book for your interests and needs: 1. Consider your preferences: Do you enjoy fiction or non-fiction? Do you prefer mystery novels or romance novels? Knowing your own tastes and preferences can help narrow down your options and make it easier to find a book that speaks to you. 2. Look at the book's summary: Most books have a summary or blurb on the back cover or on the book's Amazon page. This can give you a good idea of what the book is about and whether it aligns with your interests. 3. Read reviews: Reviews from other readers can be a helpful resource when picking a book. Look for reviews that mention the plot, characters, and writing style of the book to get a better sense of what to expect. Just keep in mind that reviews are subjective, so take them with a grain of salt. 4. Check out book lists and recommendations: There are many websites and blogs that provide book recommendations based on different genres or themes. These lists can be a great resource for finding new books to try. 5. Try a sample: If you're still unsure about a book, try reading a sample before committing to the whole thing. Many e-book retailers offer free samples of books, so you can get a feel for the writing style and plot before deciding whether to purchase the full book. 6. Ask for recommendations: Don't be afraid to ask friends, family, or a librarian for book recommendations. They may have some great suggestions based on your interests and what they know about your reading preferences. 7. Take your mood into account: Your mood can play a big role in what kind of book you want to read. If you're feeling down, a feel-good romance novel or a heartwarming memoir might be just the thing to lift your spirits. On the other hand, if you're feeling energized and ready for a challenge, a complex, thought-provoking novel might be more [your speed](/want-to-read-more-books-in-less-time-here-how-speed-reading-can-help). 8. Try something new: While it's always nice to find a book that aligns with your interests, it can also be rewarding to try something outside your comfort zone. If you usually stick to mystery novels, try branching out and giving a science fiction novel a chance. You never know what you might discover! 9. Don't be afraid to put a book down: If you're not enjoying a book, it's okay to set it aside and try something else. Life is too short to waste time on a book that isn't engaging or enjoyable. ## Summary Ultimately, the best book for you is the one that speaks to you on a personal level and keeps you engaged from beginning to end. By considering your preferences, reading reviews and summaries, and taking your mood into account, you can find a book that you'll love and that will provide you with hours of enjoyment. Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) is a technique that can help improve speed reading skills by allowing the reader to process and comprehend text at a much faster rate. This technique involves presenting text one word at a time, rather than in traditional sentence or paragraph form. This can be done through a variety of methods, including using a specialized software program or an RSVP app, or simply by using a pen or finger to cover up all but one word at a time while reading. You can use the RSVP technique while reading on the Readima extension `youtube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZoM9SBi4hY` ## The benefits of RSVP technique One of the main benefits of RSVP is that it forces the reader to focus on each individual word, rather than getting caught up in the overall structure of the sentence or paragraph. This helps to eliminate the tendency to re-read or skim over words, which can slow down the reading process. Additionally, because the reader is only presented with one word at a time, they are less likely to get lost in the text or lose their place, which can also contribute to slower reading speeds. Another advantage of RSVP is that it can help improve comprehension by allowing the reader to process each word more fully. When reading in traditional paragraph form, the brain is often trying to predict what comes next and fill in gaps, which can lead to misunderstandings or missed information. By presenting words one at a time, the reader is able to fully process and comprehend each word before moving on to the next. This can help to increase overall understanding of the material and retain more of the information being read. There are a few different ways that RSVP can be used to improve speed reading skills. One approach is to start by reading a passage of text at a slow pace, with a pause between each word. The reader can then gradually increase the speed at which they are reading, until they are able to read at a comfortable, yet still faster pace. Another approach is to use an RSVP app or software program, which can present the text one word at a time at a set speed. The reader can then adjust the speed as needed to find their optimal reading pace. It's important to note that RSVP is not a replacement for traditional reading methods, and should not be used all the time. It can be a useful tool for certain types of reading, such as dense or technical material, but may not be as effective for more narrative or creative writing. It's also important to keep in mind that RSVP is not a magic solution for improving reading speed, and will likely require practice and repetition to see significant improvement. ## Summary Overall, Rapid Serial Visual Presentation is a technique that can be a valuable tool for improving speed reading skills. By presenting text one word at a time, it can help the reader focus on each individual word, improve comprehension, and read at a faster pace. While it may take some practice to get used to, RSVP can be a useful addition to any reader's toolkit. ## More Speed Reading Techniques - [How To Read 3x Faster Through Rapid Serial Visual Presentation](/blog/the-rapid-serial-visual-presentation-method-for-speed-reading) - Deep dive into RSVP - [The Secret to Speed Reading Success: Meta Guiding](/blog/the-secret-to-speed-reading-success-meta-guiding) - Learn the pointer technique - [Transform Your Reading Experience with Readima](/blog/transform-your-reading-experience-with-readima-the-ultimate-speed-reading-tool) - Combine all techniques --- **Try RSVP reading right now!** [Download Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readima/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj) — the free Chrome extension that brings RSVP to any webpage. Meta Guiding! Source: https://readima.com/blog/the-secret-to-speed-reading-success-meta-guiding Published: 2022-12-19 Tags: Visualization, Meta guiding, Subvocalization, Comprehension, Speed reading the meta guiding technique can be a powerful tool for improving your speed reading skills and helping you get through large amounts of information more efficiently ## What is the Meta Guiding technique? Speed reading is a skill that can greatly improve your efficiency and productivity, allowing you to get through more information in less time. One technique that can be particularly effective for speed reading is known as meta guiding, which involves using a visual guide to help you focus and move quickly through the text. To use the [meta guiding technique](/meta-guiding-how-to-learn-faster-by-changing-the-way-you-read), you will need to start by selecting a visual guide, such as a pen or a ruler. You can also use a digital tool such as a finger or a cursor on a computer screen. The purpose of the visual guide is to help you focus on the text and prevent your eyes from drifting or skipping ahead. To begin reading, place the visual guide under the first line of text and focus on the words as you move it down the page. Try to keep your eyes fixed on the guide and avoid re-reading or going back to previous lines. As you become more comfortable with the technique, you can try increasing your speed by moving the visual guide more quickly down the page. > *[Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/reading-buddy/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj?hl=en&authuser=0) offers Meta Guiding feature for you to practice speed reading* ![](/images/header/meta-guiding.gif) ## Why is Meta Guiding a good technique for speed reading? One important aspect of the meta guiding technique is to use it in combination with other speed reading strategies, such as chunking and skimming. Chunking involves grouping words into chunks or phrases rather than reading each word individually. This can help you process the information more efficiently and improve your comprehension. Skimming involves quickly scanning the text to get a general understanding of the content, and then focusing on specific sections that are most relevant to your needs. Another helpful tip for using the meta guiding technique is to practice it with different types of material, such as fiction and non-fiction, to get a sense of what works best for you. You may find that you are better able to focus on fiction texts, for example, because they tend to have fewer technical terms and can be more engaging. It's also important to be aware of your own reading habits and to try to break any bad habits that may be slowing you down. For example, if you tend to subvocalize (or "say" the words in your head) as you read, try to break this habit by focusing on the visual guide and moving it more quickly down the page. One way to practice the meta guiding technique is to set aside dedicated reading time each day and gradually increase your speed as you become more comfortable with the technique. You can also try setting goals for yourself, such as reading a certain number of pages within a certain time frame, to help motivate you to improve your speed. ## Summary Overall, the meta guiding technique can be a powerful tool for improving your speed reading skills and helping you get through large amounts of information more efficiently. With practice and dedication, you can develop this skill and see significant improvements in your reading speed and comprehension. So, it is worth giving a try if you want to improve your reading skills. ## Related Articles - [Meta Guiding – How To Learn Faster](/blog/meta-guiding-how-to-learn-faster-by-changing-the-way-you-read) - Deep dive into meta guiding - [Boost Your Reading with RSVP](/blog/boost-your-reading-speed-and-comprehension-with-this-simple-trick-RSVP) - Try another technique - [Bionic Reading: Science-Backed Typography](/blog/bionic-reading-read-faster-with-science-backed-typography) - Modern speed reading --- **Try meta guiding now!** [Download Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readima/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj) for free and start using the visual pointer on any webpage. Source: https://readima.com/blog/the-rapid-serial-visual-presentation-method-for-speed-reading Published: 2022-08-14 Tags: Rapid Serial Visual Presentation, speed reading, monologue, Word–Chunking, active reading, RSVP Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) is a technique for reading and learning. It has been shown to improve reading speed, comprehension and recall. ## What is The Rapid Serial Visual Presentation method? Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) is a technique for reading and learning. It has been shown to improve [reading speed](/speed-reading-the-secrets-super-power-for-success), comprehension and recall. The main aim of RSVP is to provide students with the ability to read faster and more accurately by converting text into images. The images are arranged in a rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) format, which makes it easier for the reader's brain to process information from the page. ## How does The Rapid Serial Visual Presentation work? The Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) is a technique that can be used to read faster and more efficiently. The RSVP is made up of two parts: 1) The first part involves dividing the text into words by looking at each word individually. This allows you to process words more quickly, as there is no need to look back at what you have already read. It also can help with comprehension, as you will know what words you need to prioritize as you go through the document. 2) The second part involves seeing all of these words in order, so that they are presented one after another. This allows your brain to use information more effectively and makes it easier for you to retain what you’ve read. ## The benefit of The Rapid Serial Visual Presentation method The key benefit of this technique is that it allows you to read fast by breaking down long passages into smaller chunks of information while still retaining their meaning. This also helps with comprehension, which is an important part of learning anything new or difficult. Another benefit is that RSSV makes it easier for people with dyslexia or other problems with visual processing skills to understand text because they are able to focus on individual words instead of large blocks of information like many traditional methods do. ## How do you practice The Rapid Serial Visual Presentation with Readima? Beside the [Meta Guiding method](/meta-guiding-how-to-learn-faster-by-changing-the-way-you-read), Readima also implements the RSVP method for improving your speed reading experience. You can select the RSVP tab on the right reading bar and press the start button `youtube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZoM9SBi4hY` You can use RSVP when you're working with documents or materials that aren't written for speed reading. For example, if you're using a textbook with illustrations or diagrams, you can use RSVP to skim them quickly and get an idea of what they're trying to communicate before you go any further. ## Conclusion The key benefit of Rapid Serial Visual Presentation is that it allows you to read fast by breaking down long passages into smaller chunks of information while still retaining their meaning. This is a huge benefit for speed reading, as it prevents you from having to re-read sections of text later on. The speed reading technique is also effective in helping you remember what you've read. In fact, many people who use this method report that they're able to recall more information than they did before using the technique. ## Explore More Reading Techniques - [Boost Your Reading Speed and Comprehension with RSVP](/blog/boost-your-reading-speed-and-comprehension-with-this-simple-trick-RSVP) - More RSVP tips - [Meta Guiding – How To Learn Faster](/blog/meta-guiding-how-to-learn-faster-by-changing-the-way-you-read) - The pointer method - [Bionic Reading: Read 25% Faster](/blog/bionic-reading-read-faster-with-science-backed-typography) - Typography-based speed reading --- **Experience RSVP reading today!** [Download Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readima/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj) for free and transform any article into RSVP format. In fact, it has been around for 75 years and has been used by successful people like Steve Jobs to get more done in less time ## Introduction Speed reading is not new. In fact, it has been around for 75 years and has been used by successful people like Steve Jobs to get more done in less time. Speed reading allows you to read faster than your normal speed. This allows you to scan large amounts of information quickly without reading every word or paragraph and then rereading it later on if needed. The goal here isn’t just getting through the words but also understanding what you are reading so that your brain can process it more efficiently as well as recall important points later on when necessary (which will allow us all to save even more time!) ## Speed reading has been the secret weapon of successful people for 75 years. Speed reading has been the secret weapon of successful people for 75 years. It’s not new and it doesn’t require any special skills; it’s just a skill that can be learned, practiced and used by anyone who wants to get more done in less time. But what exactly is speed reading? How does one become a super-fast reader? And how does this translate into your daily life? Let's take an in-depth look at these questions by exploring some of the key concepts about speed reading that make it such an effective tool for getting things done quickly and efficiently ## Speed reading can be learned, but it takes practice. Speed reading is a skill that can be learned, but it takes practice. It's about reading more words per minute, which means that you have to read faster than your normal rate of speech. You'll also have to count the number of words in each sentence and make sure that you don't skip around from one line to another without pausing for breath or taking time out for reflection. *[Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/reading-buddy/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj?hl=en) is a tool for you track how many words you read* ![](/images/header/meta-guiding.gif) Speed reading is about looking at each word as soon as it appears on screen and then skimming over what follows it before moving onto something else entirely—and not letting those gaps between thoughts distract you from getting through them fast enough so as not to lose track! The good news is that there are plenty of ways out there right now (and here) which can help us increase our speed when reading long passages ## You can read faster if you learn the right method While there are many different ways to improve your reading speed, the most important thing is to find a method that works for you. If you're reading a lot of text and struggling with comprehension, then it's time to rethink your strategy. While there are many different ways to improve your reading speed, the most important thing is to find a method that works for you. If you're reading a lot of text and struggling with comprehension, then it's time to rethink your strategy. - Chunk Word Method This method requires the reader to pay close attention while they read by breaking down sentences into smaller chunks or words so as not overwhelm them by sheer volume alone (e.g., "The boy ran downstairs"). By doing this repeatedly over time - even just once every few minutes while exercising - readers will find themselves remembering more information than would typically be available through normal reading patterns alone - Meta Guiding Method: This method relies on the reader's ability to identify patterns within a text and use them as cues for reading faster (e.g., "If I pick up the newspaper and see an ad for McDonalds, then my eyes will naturally go towards it"). Online courses can be expensive and time-consuming, so we recommend using Readima extension for Chrome as an alternative method of learning speed reading. > You only learn speed reading by reading Readima is free and easy to use, making it one of the best tools on the market for teaching yourself how to speed read faster than ever before! It's great for anyone who wants to learn how to read faster without spending money on expensive courses or downloading complicated software. Plus, it's super easy to use just by installing Readima on your web browser with one click! Start practicing today and master it soon! It's easier to learn speed reading in person than online because there are many more opportunities for social interaction with others who share your same goals of improving their reading skills. ## Reading speed doesn't decrease comprehension Speed reading is a bit more than just getting through the text quickly. It's about developing your eyes' movement, which allows you to move through information at a rate that matches your comprehension level. As an example of how this works, let's say that there's a passage in the book you're reading and it's long and dense with information (like most texts). If you can't read it fast enough then it will be difficult for your brain to process everything by itself. But if someone were able to read it faster than normal and still understand what they were reading. Then this person would have an advantage over everyone else who didn't practice this skill yet! Speed readers are known for being able to skip entire sections of text without losing comprehension because their brains know where each word belongs within those sections so well. ## Speed reading is a super power that you can learn and master in weeks with Readima app Speed reading is a super power that you can learn and master in weeks with Readima app. Speed reading is a skill that can be mastered, using this app you'll be able to read at a faster speed than ever before! We'll also discuss some other benefits of meta-guiding so that by the end of this article, I hope that you too will be ready to try out this amazing tool for improving your reading skills ## Introduction Have you ever heard of metaguiding? No, it's not a new type of fast food or a type of shoe. It's a [technique that can help you read faster](/4-speed-reading-secrets-that-will-improve-your-reading-speed) and with more comprehension. If you have never tried metaguiding before, then this article is for you! In this article we will explain what metaguiding is and how it works. We'll also discuss some other benefits of meta-guiding so that by the end of this article, I hope that you too will be ready to try out this amazing tool for improving your reading skills ## Metaguiding is the next big thing in speed reading Metaguiding is the next big thing in speed reading. It's a combination of speed reading and guided reading, and it's an entirely new technique that works incredibly well. Metaguiding is also very powerful—it can help you read faster than ever before! In this article we'll discuss metaguiding in more detail: what it is, how it works, why people use it (and why they might not), how to implement metaguiding into your own life as quickly as possible... ## How does metaguiding work? [Meta guiding](/the-secret-to-speed-reading-success-meta-guiding) is a speed reading technique that involves visually guiding your eye using some sort of pointer (finger, pen or Readima app) in order for the eye to move faster along the length of a passage of text. The idea behind metaguiding is simple: you use visual cues to help you read more quickly. This process requires two things: - An understanding of what makes up how we read normal text and - Practice with metaguiding techniques until they become second nature for you > *[Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/reading-buddy/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj?hl=en&authuser=0) offers Meta Guiding feature for you to practice speed reading* ![](/images/header/meta-guiding.gif) ## Why does metaguiding work? Metaguiding is an easy and effective way to increase your reading speed. The point is to remove distraction, so you can focus on the specific words and phrases that are most important in the text. Metaguiding involves following an order of words that makes it easier for your eyes to move across the page faster than they normally would be able to do in a random manner. It’s like using a guide rope when hiking: You want every step forward or backward to follow a line because then there will always be something underfoot (the ground) rather than nothing at all! ## Meta-guiding has a lot of benefits! Speed reading is a great way to improve your reading skills, but it can also be frustrating when you're trying to learn how to speed read. Meta-guiding helps you learn how to speed read faster and more efficiently by breaking down each step of the process into small chunks that make up one sentence or paragraph. This allows you to see what's going on in the text at any given time without having to keep track of every word as it flows from one line or paragraph into another, making it easier for your brain (and eyes) because it doesn't have as much work load. ## Conclusion We know that metaguiding is a lot of work, but it’s worth it. If you want to improve your reading speed and increase your vocabulary, then you should try the meta-guiding method. It has many benefits and we think you will get hooked on it as soon as you start using it! ## Keep Learning - [The Secret to Speed Reading Success: Meta Guiding](/blog/the-secret-to-speed-reading-success-meta-guiding) - More meta guiding tips - [How To Read 3x Faster Through RSVP](/blog/the-rapid-serial-visual-presentation-method-for-speed-reading) - Another powerful technique - [4 Speed Reading Secrets](/blog/4-speed-reading-secrets-that-will-improve-your-reading-speed) - Additional techniques to master --- **Practice meta guiding today!** [Download Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/readima/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj) — the free Chrome extension with built-in meta guiding. If so, then I've got the tips to make it happen. Check out my exclusive report with 4 speed reading secrets that will improve your reading speed. ## 1. Drop the Inner Monologue The inner monologue (or subvocalization) is a ubiquitous trait among readers. It is the process of speaking the words in your head as you read, and it is the biggest obstacle that gets in the way of increasing your reading speed. You learn to read by reading aloud in school. Once you were proficient enough, your teacher had you start saying the words in your head. This is how the habit originated, and most people continue reading this way. It does not adversely affect them until they start wanting to read at a faster pace. If you are seeking to increase your reading speed, this is the first thing you must learn to overcome. You can use this formulas **{your reading speed} = {your speaking speed} = around 300 words per minute ** If you want to continue to improve your reading speed, you need to eliminate inner monologue. ![](/images/talk_too_much.gif) ## 2. Word–Chunking Word-chunking is the practice of breaking down a word or phrase into smaller chunks that are easier to remember. To apply word-chunking to speed reading, you should look for common words and phrases in your text and group them together. For example, if you're reading about a new technology, you might group together words like "internet," "video conference," "virtual reality," etc. Once you know what words or phrases to group together, it's time to start chunking them. You can do this by simply spacing out each word or phrase on its own line or page so that it's easy for you to see and read the whole chunk at once. > Tip: Use a reading pointer like a ruler or a pencil may help you focus on a long chunk ## 3. Do Not Reread the Words Watching the average person's eyes as they read, you will notice they jump and flit. Watch this video to understand the eyes' movements: `youtube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSEWrbcrFc0` They do not just flow evenly back and forth as they should. This is because the average person – you do this, too – tends to backtrack over words they have already read. This is one thing that prevents you from being able to increase your reading speed. You most likely do this without even realizing that you are doing it, making it a bad habit to break out of. Even though you may feel a bit childish, the easiest way is to use your finger or bookmark to guide you. Keep your finger running back and forth across the page without stopping or going back. [Keep tracking the words](/meta-guiding-how-to-learn-faster-by-changing-the-way-you-read) as your finger continues to make its way down the text. > *[Readima](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/reading-buddy/mlfigafgefbkdmppofpcfbckkbfdjmjj?hl=en&authuser=0) offers this pointer feature while you read on the Internet. * ![](/images/header/meta-guiding.gif) When you get to the end, think about what you read. You did not go back over a single word and you still recall what you read. Read more about active reading below ## 4. Active reading Please give yourself a specific goal when reading. The best way is to ask yourself these questions like - What's the main idea of this paragraph? - Why does the author write like this? It would be best if you guessed what the author presents in the next paragraph or chapter at a high level. Or you can explain what you've read to someone else Doing this exercise helps you become an active reader. This also improves your reading comprehension. Active reading forces you to pay attention to what you're reading and creates a mental checklist for what comes next. You'll need to stop frequently for breath, but this will help you focus on what's important. You'll remember more. Active reading also helps your brain process information more efficiently. When you're actively reading, your brain can't wait for new information—it must process it as soon as possible. This is why passive readers often find themselves confused by new information soon after they've finished reading something. You'll be able to understand complex concepts better. When you're actively reading, you'll be able to absorb the meaning behind complex ideas that would otherwise be beyond you—and that's important when it comes to learning new things or thinking critically about them later on in life. ## Final Thoughts Speed Reading is a skill that can be attained by anyone. It doesn't matter how old you are or what your current reading level is, it only matters that you have the courage to start. And when you do begin to practice and adhere to the methods described in this article, you will see drastic improvements in your reading speed within a short period of time. Just remember not to become discouraged when you don't see improvement immediately. Give yourself time to grow and learn new skills. Once you do become proficient at Speed Reading, expect to change your life forever by increasing your productivity at work, saving money on books, and reaching goals beyond your current comprehension. ## Continue Your Speed Reading Journey Want to learn more techniques? I did some research to boost this number up. I came across 2 techniques: Optimal Recognition Point and Meta Guiding. With Optimal Recognition Point, each word shown on screen to draw your attention to that word. `youtube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yddeRrd0hA` The problem is I retained almost nothing after increasing speed to 400 wpm (my goal) Then I applied the Meta Guiding technique on my Kindle. `youtube:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMU1-kjkFOA` I realized a big improvement with this technique. My speed was up to ~450 wpm without loosing the comprehensive. One problem appeared, holding a pointer even a straw is fatigue. So I came up with this Readima idea Making an app for Kindle is impossible now, so I want to stimulate this Meta Guiding technique to the web by the browser extensions. ![](https://media.giphy.com/media/d96LPfVRWGX2C38C0o/giphy.gif) Hope you guys can increase the reading speed with my app. 💪 Feel free to receive your feedback!
